Tuesday....

Summerlyn and I watched the Jackson news all day yesterday. She has just "come into" his music. Her mom was a huge fan when she was in high school. We had some good discussions about his life, fame, fortune, problems and eternity according to what we know via the news.

Yesterday afternoon Miss Summerlyn started her first basket. We went to the shed and out came the OLD basketweaving supplies. The handle she chose is years older than she is. I made pictures with the kids' camera because Jonathan took my good one (on its last leg) on an all day outing with a friend. Anyway, somehow the pictures of the beginning of her basket got erased by mistake, but I did get a pic of her lashing the rim to the basket this morning, and then the finished basket. I told her she would have this basket long after her Meem is gone from this earth.

I could tell right away that she would be a whiz basketmaker. I've taught hundreds to weave baskets and know one when I see one and she fits the bill. MY first basket never looked this good - and she could easily figure out how to remedy something where most people have to be shown. I asked her to sign and date the bottom of the basket and she did. I am so proud of her! The first basket was woven on a "D" handle. The next one will be woven without a handle inserted until the end.

Her knitting is not going as well. We started out casting on 30 stitches. After she got 10 rows in, she had 84 stitches! Oh gosh. I think she wants to go too fast. She says that knitting is "getting to me".... I told her she may need to be 12 or 13 or 15 to take knitting seriously. One thing about it: There is no learing it without learning it RIGHT.... holding the yarn, casting on, etc. etc. etc. Its right or not at all.

She is a great little crafts person much to her Meem's delight!
