A New Day @ School.....a new era....

I am NOT into risque'.

Today is Valentine's Day, and most of what I've heard on TV today has been about "Valentine's Day" including news talk programs that smack heavily of the risque' as well as TV ads that zoom in on the subject.

I will share these stories that happened at different schools where Charles was working and he has worked in a LOT of situations through the years with a multitude of kids. One of the many things we've learned is: Kids are amazing in good ways... but there are some who are amazing in bad ways. The world has just gone crazy.. but there's hope. In a separate post, I will share the "ultimate Valentine".

1. Picture a little ninth grader who loves to do "research". This fellow was doing research in the school library all week...at lunch, before school, after school, and any time a teacher would let him go from class for a few minutes do work in the library. Totally typical and reasonable request from a student. There are several rooms at the library where this can be done by students so it was easy for him to have access and easy for no one to be suspicious of anything.

But he was a little TOO diligent for a 9th grader and the librarian decided to check it out.

This kid had managed to break through the extreme security system - firewall, had gained access to and was running porn pictures in full living color on the copy machine and selling them to other students. He was living "high on the hog" for a few days from all of the money he was making! Of course he was immediately in BIG trouble.....and he isn't on campus anymore.

2. One day at former high school where CT served as principal, the secretary walks into Charles' office nervous and red-faced. "Mr. Thomas, I hate to even bring this up.... I don't know how to say this...." Charles got irritated and told the gal to just spit it out! "Mr. Thomas, you can NOT be charging internet porn sites on the school credit card."

You could have picked him up off the floor.

#1, he doesn't look at the stuff and
#2, if he DID, he'd be smart enough to NOT bill it to the school credit card!

He warned the proper officials in the school system that there was a problem, and then investigated, and caught the student who had walked by and had seen a card laying on someone's desk before they could get it put away, and had written down the number, and used it to purchase porn. Amazing!

You know? We didn't even know what the word porn WAS when we were in school.

And here's the final story - this one is good .....

3. Last week CT had to observe teachers. One teacher asked him to come to her room at ? period so he went. The object these days is to have good test scores (among other things), and some teachers are totally creative in the ways in which they go about teaching kids. This teacher was no exception.

He walked into the room to hear music from the sixties (OUR ERA) playing. The day when songs had story themes and made sense. The kids had to listen to the words of the song, list the main character in each song and write a sentence telling what the "story" was about. Good practice for the upcoming standardized tests they will have to take.

Songs from the sixties were GREAT songs, but there was a song "back then" called "My Ding-a-Ling" and the lyrics were NOT something a teacher would use in a classroom setting - and when that song began to play, Charles was nearly in the floor in shock.

After class, the teacher laughed. "You thought I was going to play the dirty version of that old song, didn't you?" (SHE had found a cute clean version and played it for the class. Those kids were eating it up.) Bravo for that creative teacher. Her class should do well on the state test!

And now.... the ultimate Valentine - our Hope.
